The Scottish Working Woods labelA new label for Scottish woodland productsWhat will it do?The Scottish Working Woods label will guarantee products made in Scotland, by producers based in Scotland, from woodland materials grown, harvested and processed in Scotland. The emphasis of the label is to highlight small producers supplying quality products in ways which benefit the environment and rural communities. In this way many small businesses together can create a recognised and valued brand, raising the profile of their products. See the Scottish Working Woods website for more information. Who's behind the label? This is an independent product label, owned and managed by a consortium of trade associations in Scotland. The Scottish Working Woods label is supported by:the Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers and the Scottish Furniture Makers Association How can non-timber businesses apply to use the label? In order to keep bureaucracy to a minimum, the scheme is designed to be administered through existing trade associatons. Only members of those trade associations can apply to use the label. As yet there is no trade association for non-timber woodland product businesses in Scotland, so initially the label will only cover the homegrown hardwood timber and furniture sectors. However, Reforesting Scotland has agreed to act as a contact point for non-timber businesses interested in using the label. You can contact Reforesting Scotland to register your interest (click here to email). In the coming months we intend to put in place a co-ordinator, to administer applications for the label and to work with businesses towards establishing a trade association. |
