Wood blewit (Lepista nuda)

Description

Greyish mushroom with pale gills, named because of the bluish tinge in its stem. When young, it is bluish or violet all over. The cap turns reddish with age.

Habitat

Woodlands.

Uses

Good to eat, but indigestible raw. Try chopping and frying the stems with onions and a little chopped sage, and then simmer together with the rest of the mushroom in a little milk for 30 minutes. Serve with mashed potato. This species also freezes well.

Gathering

Gather in the autumn.

See the mushroom page for general advice on gathering wild fungi.
